The Alderney Society

The Alderney Society is an Organisation dedicated to the historical, environmental, and scientific promotion of the Island of Alderney.

Our Aims
To encourage and participate in research into all the fields of knowledge concerning the Island of Alderney and to record and propagate the results of such research.

To encourage the scientific and cultural activities of the Island and to support projects associated with those aims. To preserve and record structures, sites and chattels of historical or scientific interest or artistic merit on the Island and to contribute to Alderney's assets in landscape, townscape, flora and fauna.

To make representations to the States and the people of Alderney should the Island's way of life, character or natural heritage appear to be threatened by encroachment or despoilment.

To encourage and assist the conservation of the environment.

Our Organisation
An elected Council and invited Trustees are responsible for long-term policy for The Alderney Society as a whole.

All the activities of The Society are carried out unpaid by members in their spare time. People in need of active retirement need look no further than Alderney.

Members are encouraged to join the Society's sub-groups, the most active being The History and Archaeology and The Natural History Section. Various Society projects, such as the on-going excavation and restoration of an old watermill, are undertaken by volunteers who devote their time one day a week all year round and in all weather conditions.

The Society also publishes an annual Bulletin containing reports of its activities and projects.

Membership
The Society has some 600 members, largely Islanders, and visitors who have come to love the Island. Membership rates are kept deliberately low to encourage local residents to join. As a result, the Society cannot afford a large overseas membership as the cost of the annual Bulletin and postage overseas would be greater than the subscription rate.

Individul Membership - £10.00 per annum
Family Membership - £15.00 per annum
Life Membership - £250.00

The Alderney Research Group
The Group was formed as a result of discussions between members of The Alderney Society and Reading University (UK). It consists of Society members, university staff and post-graduate students from various UK universities, all of whom have carried out research in Alderney or the marine environment around the Island.

The Group's objectives include the listing of all known publications and research papers on Alderney, and continuing to undertake research in the Island.

The Alderney-Guernsey Project includes the recording of objects and documents relating to Alderney which are housed elsewhere.

Private Health Insurance
The Society acts as agents for private health insurance, using the commission that it generates to maintain the Museum and care for its collection.
